White Oak Library presents Books & Beer: "My Lovely Wife" by Samantha Downing

Join us at the Romeoville Branch Library on the second Tuesday evening of each month for a lively book discussion, beer/wine and other beverages and snacks. This month's book is My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. For this months books and beer pick were diving into a thriller that will leave you guessing from chapter to chapter. My Lovely Wife is about a couple who after years of marriage decide to spice up their relationship by following the idea "couples who slay together stay together". This book will be available one month prior to the discussion and can be picked up at the Romeoville Branch Library's Adult Services Desk and will be due back one week after the book club date. Strap up for a grand expedition – from the safety of Isle a la Cache Museum! In 1673, Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet set out for a voyage by canoe that took them thousands of miles into the heart of North America. They faced challenges from weather, illness, unknown peoples and even river monsters. What choices would you make in their shoes? Whether you’re a solo traveler or you bring a canoe full, come out for this fun, choose-your-own-adventure, trivia-style game to see who comes out on top. Refreshments will be served. Multi-Chamber Virtual Progressive Networking Event

Join us for the first in a series of Romeoville Art Society "Artist Spotlight" programs at the Romeoville Branch library! Adults and teens welcome! Sit back and enjoy watching local artist, Joe Hadamik as he demonstrates how to create wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery. Joe’s primary focus is producing functional pieces that are used in the home, but he also makes sculptural pieces out of clay which sometimes incorporate other media. Register here.

For centuries, travelers of all kinds were also historians. Thoughts recorded in personal journals carried across land, ocean and time helped document historical events. Now it’s your turn! Join an interpretive naturalist and learn how to document your own historic journeys! Participants will learn how to sign their name in cursive, make and decorate their own journals and try writing with a quill and ink. The program will conclude with a journal-worthy short hike. Join us for a hands-on program designed for your little one. This program is geared toward children ages 2-5 and complete with tons of facts, singing, story time, table activities and crafts. Isle a la Cache Museum is an accessible facility. Outdoor activities will take place on paved paths and natural surfaces across 1 mile of uneven terrain. Age: Ages 14 or older.
Need to relax and reconnect? Join us for this simple Japanese method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees as nature shifts from winter to spring. Meet at the museum to learn a few tips, then walk to our forested shoreline trail. Sit and observe nature while breathing deeply to help de-stress and boost health and well-being. Afterwards join us for tea, continuing to ease back into your day by exploring our on-loan Smithsonian exhibition, “Journey Stories.” The program may include hiking less than 0.5 miles on preserve trails over uneven terrain. The museum is an accessible facility. Part of this program includes sitting on the ground (mats provided); please contact us if you need a chair. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Don’t forget the lavender! That’s because we are talking French herb gardens. Potager, or French kitchen gardens, have intermingled vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs since medieval times. Learn about this garden’s roots, how it made its way to Illinois Country and tips on starting your own at home. Then create a mini plant nursery out of recycled materials where you will start your own seedlings to take home. Your sprouts will be ready to plant in your garden come spring. In honor of Isle a la Cache Museum hosting the Smithsonian exhibition “Journey Stories,” discover the adventures of French voyageurs as they travel the river roads. During Living History Encounters, you may find cooks, seamstresses, voyageurs, soldiers or craftsmen sharing their talents. No registration is required. This month's book is Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Migrations takes place in an environmental dystopia, where researcher Franny Stone makes a voyage to Antarctica to observe the last migration of an endangered species. During this journey, Franny makes a number of important realizations about her dark past and her true motivations for making the trip. This novel is an deep and emotional look at topics such as conservation, grief, and our own personal nature. This book will be available one month prior to the discussion and can be picked up at the Romeoville Branch Library's Adult Services Desk and will be due back one week after the book club date.
