The Romeoville Police Department will now equip their officers with body cameras while they are out in the field. The State of Illinois has mandated that communities with populations under 100,000 (which includes Romeoville) have body cameras on their police officers by 2025. Romeoville was able to deploy their cameras roughly two years ahead of that deadline due in large part to $455,000 in grant money from the State. The department has purchased 70 cameras.
The Village of Romeoville believes that transparency and accountability are essential in local government. These cameras will provide even more of those essentials in addition to bolstering safety and security for our officers and the public.
“We welcome body cameras and the transparency that comes with them,” said Romeoville Police Chief Ken Kroll. “We believe these cameras will provide another level of partnership with the community and will become just another tool we use to do our job.”
The Romeoville Police Department has made great advances in technology integration in the past few years. Most recently, license plate reading Flock cameras were installed at various intersections. The department has had tremendous success with these cameras and is expanding their coverage accordingly. In addition to the body cameras, all of the patrol and traffic squad cars are now outfitted with dash cameras. Finally, more technology based training and field tools have been added, keeping RPD up to date with the latest policing developments.
