The Diocese property along 135th Street, across from the post office, has some big plans being drawn up for it. The overall vision for Romeo Crossing Park is a four-phase project, with phases one and two currently in process.
The first phase of Romeo Crossing includes two separate dog park areas for large and small dogs, shelters, water fountains, waste stations, and a 30+ space parking lot. The second phase of the project focuses on the grounds: earth grading, drainage, and seeding of the entire area. A new addition will be a 23-foot-high sled hill with a 100-foot slope to be constructed at that stage. It is sure to instantly become the best snow hill in Romeoville.
“This project will finally give dogs a place to run around, meet other dogs, and have owners meet each other,” explained Mayor John Noak. “Also, it will add needed sports fields to our roster. Residents will be able to come to Romeo Crossing to play soccer, baseball, go sledding, and more.”
As the mayor alludes to, phase three and four of the project (projected for 2023-24) will bring a host of additional amenities to the property. Phase three brings an adapted sports field and lights, restrooms and concessions, a playground and challenge course, another shelter, baggo, trails, and stairs and a seating area to the sled hill for warm weather activities like stair running. The challenge course will be over 3,000 square feet of fitness obstacles arranged in a circuit on artificial turf.
Phase four will begin the installation of three baseball fields with lighting, batting cages, and the build out of the parking lot with another 280+ spaces. With all the additional amenities that were added to this plan and to maximize the cost effectiveness of each phase, the construction timeline on Romeo Crossing has expanded slightly. Phase one and two of the plan are currently underway and updated design being completed. The main portion of the construction is planned to occur between June and October of 2022.
