ISLE A LA CACHE MUSEUM PRESENTS TRAVEL TALES OUTDOOR TRAIL EXHIBIT
This ongoing program runs from Thursday, June 1, to Thursday, Aug. 31.
Isle a la Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Rd.
Fee: Free! Age: All ages.
Preserve hours are 8 a.m. to sunset daily. Isle a la Cache Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Humans aren’t the only creatures that travel. Animals are also on the move! Whether on short errands or long migrations, animals along our rivers are on their own journeys. Come out to Isle a la Cache Museum to see the outdoor exhibit “Travel Tales.” Walk the interpretive trail along the Des Plaines River to discover the treks – some daily and others yearly – of several local animals. Visitors are also invited to join us at the Discovery Isle drop-in programs taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays from June 14 through Aug. 2. Each week we’ll be taking a closer look at one of the animals highlighted in the “Travel Tales” exhibit. This family-friendly, outdoor interpretive trail exhibit was developed by museum staff, with the support of The Nature Foundation of Will County. Event requirements - No registration required.

Celebrate all things summer on the longest day of the year! Guests are invited to enjoy the preserve during evening hours, hike the shoreline trail, relax by the bonfire and explore the outdoor summer exhibit. Every half hour, an interpretive naturalist will give a five-minute talk on the traditions of the solstice, local pollinators, a brief history of the island and animals found in the preserve. In honor of Pollinator Week, guests are invited to enjoy a light picnic with foods that wouldn’t grow without the work of pollinators! We plan to continue removing brush from the woodland edge to open the view and improve conditions for our native plants. We would love to see you out there! No prior experience is required. The address to O'Hara Woods is 524 Belmont Dr., Romeoville, and we will be meeting in the parking lot off of Beverly J Griffin Dr. (to the southwest of Lake Strini). If you plan to attend, please bring a water bottle, a pair of work gloves (we will have extra), and dress for the weather. Loppers and all other equipment will be provided. Celebrate Pollinator Week 2023 at this family-friendly event! This year’s global theme is “Pollinators and Climate Change.” Learn about the insects and animals that perform the important task of pollinating plants, especially those that provide us with much of the food we eat. See live bats and learn about their roles in pollination from our friends at Incredible Bats. Watch the stunning documentary “The Guardians,” which “elegantly interweaves the lives of the iconic monarch butterfly with an indigenous community in Mexico” that shifted gears to protect monarch habitat. Find out how to support pollinators at home with insect hotels, gardens and plants native to our region. Try your hand at exciting pollination challenges and activities. At this workshop, materials will be provided so participants can create their own miniature art work with instructor guidance. Jamie Jensen has always loved to draw. After taking art classes in junior high, her talents blossomed. In high school, she took a variety of advanced art classes and participated in Illusion Art magazine, Art Club and Art Honor Society. Join us at the Romeoville Branch Library on the second Tuesday evening of each month for a lively book discussion, beer/wine/pop and some snacks. This month's book is "Big Little Lies" by Liane Moriarty. This story, set in Monterey, California, along its rugged central coast "follows three mothers, each at a crossroads, and their potential involvement in a riot at a school trivia night that leaves one parent dead in what appears to be a tragic accident, but which evidence shows might have been premeditated. "Big Little Lies" is also an American Emmy nominated and award winning drama television series. This book will be available one month prior to the discussion and can be picked up at the Romeoville Branch Library's Adult Services Desk and will be due back one week after the book club date. Grab a net and magnifying glass, because there are crayfish and other critters to discover in our river! Join us anytime from 1 to 3 p.m. to see what lives in and around the Des Plaines River at Isle a la Cache preserve. We will use nets to scoop for aquatic critters and then take a closer look at them. Equipment will be provided, however feel free to bring your own personal equipment. All animals will be released back into the river at the end of the program. White Oak Library presents History of Chief Alexander Robinson's Family Cemetery in Chicago

Presenter: Dan Melone, Chicagoland Archaeologist and Robinson Family Historian
Join us for one of the more important historical finds in Chicago's recent years. In August of 2015, the original headstones of Chief Alexander Robinson, Catherine Chevalier, and David Robinson were recovered by archaeologist Dan Melone the Robinson historian. descendant Verlyn Spreeman, and historian/author Scott Markus. Originally marking family graves in Robinson Woods located in a forest preserve in Chicago, the stones have been returned to Robinson family descendants, having been missing for generations. Using recently uncovered documentary evidence, this lecture will explore changes in cemetery boundaries and use through time. This lecture will outline a chronological framework for understanding cultural and natural impacts to the cemetery and surrounding landscape, and identify grave occupants and the physical layout of the cemetery.
