The Romeoville Fire Department staffs 10 part-time firefighter positions. These positions are made up of both paramedics and EMT-Basics, however by far most are paramedics. While the RFD at times will hire members who are not certified at the Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) level, all personnel are required to become certified as a BOF by the end of their one-year probationary period.
Part-time employees work every third day following the traditional fire service schedule (Black, Red, Gold shift.) Part-time employees are assigned to either day shift or night shift for 12-hours. Day shift is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and night shift is 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Employees must work holidays and weekends if their assigned shift falls on such days.
While employees are hired and assigned to a minimum of a 12-hour shift, part-time employees are often given the opportunity to be assigned to a 24-hour shift putting them on a schedule of 24 hours on shift and 48 hours off. Those assigned to 24-hour shifts are still considered part-time employees.
RFD typically conducts two or three group hiring processes per year, or as needed. The hiring process consists of an interview, criminal background check, and medical physical. The medical physical is given only if the applicant is offered employment and it is at RFD's expense. Applicants who are hired must sign a waiver which states that if they leave the department before completing one year of service, they will be obligated to reimburse RFD for the entire cost of the medical physical.
Applicants must have a recent Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within one year.
RFD operates within the Edward Hospital EMS System (Region 8.) Newly hired members must be able to successfully pass the system entry process to the Edward EMS System.
