HOSPITAL TRANSPORT POLICY
The State of Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) requires that we transport to the closest hospital(210 ILCS 50/3.20-5). In reviewing distances and travel times, we have determined that Silver Cross Hospital, and Provena-St. Joe’s in Joliet, as well as Edward Hospital in Naperville are all roughly the same. Depending on location of the incident, we will recommend transport to these hospitals.
If a patient requests transport to a facility other than those listed, the Paramedics will contact medical control and advise them of the situation. The emergency room physician will then decide if a bypass to a facility other than those listed is acceptable. If the physician does not approve the bypass, the patient has the right to refuse transport to the closest hospital. The paramedics will advise the patient that they are acting against medical advice, and will ask the patient to sign a form indicating they were adivised to be transported to the closest hospital. The paramedics may then transport to the hospital requested, if the criteria listed below is met.
In order to continue to provide emergency service to the remainder of the community, the
fire department must make every effort to maintain advanced life support services by not
sending our ambulances to hospitals other than the closest. When a citizen requests
transport to a hospital other than the closest, the ambulance crew will transport to the
following hospitals based upon call volume at the time and the approval of the Shift
Commander:
Palos Community, Palos
Good Samaritan, Downers Grove
LaGrange Community, LaGrange
Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale
Copley Hospital, Aurora
Bolingbrook Hospital, Bolingbrook
If a request is made to be transported to any other facility than those listed, a private
ambulance service will be contacted to provide transport.
