The Romeoville Tumbleweeds Gymnastics Team, run through the Romeoville Recreation Center, had 15 gymnasts compete at the 2017 National Gymnastics Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Age Group National Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee Thursday, June 22 – Saturday, June 24. Over 1,300 competitors from across the United States participated in the three-day-long event themed “Kids Helping Kids: Put a Little Love in Your Heart”.
The 2016-17 season was the first year Romeoville competed in the AAU league; this event was the largest competition that the team has participated in. Tumbleweeds athlete Mia Maglaya received the All American (highest all-around score for level 5). Five other Romeoville gymnasts placed in the top 5 for all-around score; Abigail Roppolo 4th for level 2; Deja Ray 4th for level 3; McKenzie Buchanan 4th for level 4; Ava Maglaya 5th for level 5; and Ava Bedford (4th for level 6).
Other highlights of the event included Abigail Roppolo took 2nd on bars and floor for level 2; Maggie Ryan took 2nd on beam for level 3; Gabriele Tetti took 3rd on floor for level 4s; and McKenzie Buchanan took 1st on Beam and 3rd on both bars and vault for level 4s finishing 4th in the all-around.
“The Tumbleweeds program has grown exponentially over the last decade. We are very fortunate to have dedicated athletes, talented coaches, and amazing parents in our community to be able to not only compete at the national level — but to come away with awards,” stated Kelly Rajzer, Director of Parks & Recreation.
